Piano Magic – Dark Secrets Look For Light

I know it might ruin all my cred as a synth lover or accidental goth, but I love Piano Magic. Maybe everyone will cut me some slack since they put a few records out on 4AD. Either way, I have loved them ever since I first heard Low Birth Weight (the album this song is from) while lying on Sarah’s floor in San Diego. Her record player had a repeat function and we fell asleep with this on, over and over again. Sometimes nights like that come back to me in such a rush it’s hard to believe it was already almost ten years ago. This album is definitely my favorite though to pin down a favorite song would be impossible as they are the type of deeply poetic songs that it is so easy to frame around one’s life. I can’t even begin to count how many journals of mine have Glen Johnson’s lyrics scribbled in the margins. Strangely, despite all of this, I have never seen Piano Magic — never even paid attention to when they might come through whatever city I happen to be in. I have also never seen any photos of them and only just now, by reading their website, discovered that Johnson has an electropop group with an album out on LTM. Sometimes the mystery is what’s important, what makes the chimerical instead feel so real.

no matter how dedicated someone is to a certain genre, they’ll always like at least one artist/group that doesn’t fall in the designated category. listening to one type of music and one type only would be really boring…i have goth roots, but a pretty expansive music collection. of course, there are certain genres that i don’t delve into because i know that they just aren’t my thing.

Yeah, being a music fan for such a long time definitely gives you a taste of a lot of different things. As I have mentioned previously on here, my roots lie in riot grrrl and hardcore, which led me to post-punk and new wave, which accidentally led me down the goth road (which in turn led me to the beautiful world of MINIMAL SYNTH…). I actually think Piano Magic are pretty spooky and dark, even though I am sure they are usually considered indie rock or something like that. Even though they have a few albums out on 4AD, it is after Ivo left, so you know…. BUT WHATEVER! Seriously, I was listening to “Artists’ Rifles,” “Low Birth Weight” and “The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic” all day today and that is some seriously dark shit. My mom was there (visiting the ‘rents) for part of one of them and she said it sounded “FUCKED UP” (emphasis hers).

oh…if i could only count the times that a band i liked was considered to be “indie”. haha. i know people that consider joy division to be “indie”. i’m starting to dislike that term more than “alternative”. i liked goth at a really young age(or gloom and doom, as my father called it), got into psychobilly, old punk rock, JAMC and black sabbath due to my uncle’s influence…i went to local hardcore shows, but i got sick of the cliques and the attitude..there are still a few hardcore bands that i can listen to. due to where i began and because i read WAY too many music bios, everything that came later was pretty natural…i never stopped liking any genre i just keep adding to the list. i discovered black metal 15 years ago and i really do love it…but i can’t ever put it above my first love. i’ve always had a thing for organs and synthesizers…even when the monkees featured a moog in a few songs. whether it be thomas dolby or the stuff that my dad puts down because it’s “too obscure”…i love synths. you would think that a dj with over 4000 records would be a bit more open-minded…but my dad isn’t open minded at all. at least i get to inherit those records one day….
